Day 1 closed with Devon 167 runs behind Cheshire with six wickets remaining at Sidmouth in this crunch Western Division 1 game.
Henry Dobson and Luke McCoy came into the Cheshire side that defeated Berkshire in the KO Trophy last week replacing Steve Green and Alex Money.
A sea fret greeted the sides early doors but Cheshire took the initiative as Harry Dearden won the toss and elected to bat.
A steady batting display saw the skipper top score with 55, Rob Sehmi make 44 and inform Sam Perry hit 41. Dan Wilson's fine late flurry with 43 ensured three valuable batting points for the visitors.
Solid mid-order contributions included 28 from Chris Sanders and 21 from Kevin Carroll. Kaz Syzmanski (3-66) and Matt Skeemer (3-52) were the pick of the Devon bowlers.
With sea fret a menace early on, Cheshire's 287 felt a decent first innings dig and the visitors spirits were further raised as Luke Young and Sanders restricted the early response.
By close of play the Devon reply had reached 120-4 to set up an intriguing second day.
The match continues at 11am on Tuesday 12 August.
