Devon's stunning first session turned this game on its head as 120-4 became 498 to see the home side grab a sensational 111 lead.
Ex-Somerset's Calum Haggett smashed 115 and late stand-in Ben Beamont 154 as Devon moved from the overnight 120-4 to add 261 for the fifth wicket and close on an unlikely 398. It was some show too as the pair looked in little trouble throughout.
Shell-shocked Cheshire could only watch on as 198 was added in an opening session, Beaumont and Hagget were only joined by Sam Elstone (67) and Lawrence Walker (12) in the double figures camp.
One bright light for Cheshire amid the carnage was Dan Willson's 5-92 from 22.2 overs.
The game had turned on its head as Devon accumulated a 111 lead and with Henry Dobson dismissed with Cheshire yet to get a second innings run on the board, things looked bleak.
But gradually the visitors built a recovery with Luke Young (31) and Luke McCoy (52) digging in as the ball began to turn.
Sam Perry and Rob Sehmi dug deep to take Cheshire to 187-3 at the close, Perry unbeaten on 56 and Sehmi on 40.
Cheshire closed 76 runs ahead with seven wickets remaining to once again set up an intriguing finale.
