Former Lancashire wicketkeeper Gareth Cross joins Cheshire for 2014 season

Cheshire's 2014 Minor Counties campaign will be boosted by the signing of former Lancashire wicketkeeper, Gareth Cross for 2014.

Cross joins James Duffy's young Cheshire side as they look to defend their 2013 Minor Counties Championship crown.

Having made his first class debut back in 2005, Cross was released from Lancashire last year and was snapped up by Cheshire during the winter.

'Gareth wanted to continue keeping at a high level. He's a great signing for us and he'll bring plenty of experience to the side. It'll be interesting to see the impact he has both on and off the field - he'll also be helping out with coaching,' commented Duffy.

Cross' all round capabilities offer Cheshire a number of options as in addition to his keeping, he's also talented with bat and ball.

Whilst Cross therefore offers another bowling option, he may well replace Jonny Kettle behind the stumps as Jonny remains in Australia.

Cross last played in the Cheshire County Premier League with Bowdon back in 2009 and in 2014 will be playing his club cricket with Nantwich.

Cheshire kick off their 2014 season with one dayers against Northumberland, Shropshire, Cumberland and Lincolnshire and Duffy is looking for an improvement on last year's showing.

'Whilst we had a tremendous year winning the Championship, it just didn't happen for us in the KO Trophy', he said.

'Our batting was very fragile and we just didn't perform. Yet it all seemed to gel in the three day format'.

First match - Northumberland CCC v Cheshire CCC at Jesmond CC, Sunday 27 April 2014.
