Goodwin set for Cheshire 2007 debut v Dorset

CHESTER Boughton Hall all-rounder Warren Goodwin is set to make his Cheshire debut this season when the county take on Dorset in the Minor Counties Championship Western Division, 8-10 July.

Goodwin played for Cheshire in the 2005-06 season, but last season didn’t feature because of university commitments.

But the gifted right-hander batsman and seam bowler returns to the county fold as Cheshire look to extend their impressive unbeaten start to the season.

Former Derbyshire batsman Chris Bassano, who hit a match-winning 79 not out against Berkshire last week, is unavailable because of work commitments.

However, Goodwin’s return and also that of former Yorkshire batsman Ismail Dawood once again leaves Cheshire with a strong side.

Seam bowler Tom Young, who was replaced by Hyde team-mate Daniel Berry at Berkshire after a late injury, is the other player to miss out with Goodwin and Dawood back.

“Chris (Bassano) has got to work and we felt we needed to play another batsman against Dorset,” said Cheshire skipper Andy Hall.

“Warren is in for his batting, that’s his main asset, but he can bowl as well which could be useful.

“We’ve got two frontline seamers, two spinners and two other seam bowlers with Ben Spendlove and Warren, so we’ve got plenty of options.

“He’s (Warren) not played for Cheshire for a while because of his university commitments, but he’s a good player and I hope he does well for us.”

Goodwin is likely to bat at number seven for Cheshire as 2005 Minor Counties champions gun for a third successive Western Division win at Dean Park, Bournemouth.

“We’ve had a great start to the season beating Devon and Berkshire, but you can’t afford to make mistakes,” added Hall.

“Winning has become a habit, but another win puts a step closer winning the Division.

“Winning is not expected, but there’s a lot of belief in the players. You look around the changing room and you know everyone wants to succeed this season.

“We’ve got a strong side, but it’s massive starting the season well. We didn’t last year and that realistically put paid to our chances of winning the Division.

“This season we’ve started well, but we must make sure we push on and not relax. We’re four points ahead at the top and in a strong position, but there’s a lot of work to do. We’ve got to keep on winning.”
