A SOLID batting performance was the key to success as Cheshire A cruised to a six-wicket victory over
a Staffordshire Development XI at Audley Cricket Club.
Chasing 238 for victory from 50 overs, the county second string won with 7.1 overs to spare to register
their second win in four days.
Cheshire made three changes to the side which beat the Yorkshire Academy by 111 runs ealier in the week with
Nick Cantello (Bramhall), James Hawley (Macclesfield) and Tom Twiney (Timperley) replaced by Alan Day (Alderley Edge),
Craig Melrose (Macclesfield) and Warren Goodwin (Chester Boughton Hall).
But the visitors found it tough going in the field as their hosts won the toss and elected to bat, racking up 237-3 from their allotted 50 overs.
However, Cheshire were up to the challenge and an opening partnership of 88 between Oulton Park's Jonny Kettle (38)
and county first-team regular Warren Goodwin (45) - back from injury - guaranteed a solid start.
Stand-in skipper Ollie Sadler, from Nantwich CC, hit an unbeaten 40, while Chester Boughton Hall's Freddie Owen (31),
Macclesfield's Rick Moore (33) and Day (26 not out) were also in the runs as Cheshire eased to victory.
"Staffordshire should have scored a few more runs, but our batting was our strength today. We showed our strength in depth,"
praised Cheshire team manager Sandy Scrimgeour.
"It's nice to see the next layer of players coming through, everyone got runs for us today."
Staffordshire were captained by former Derbyshire ace Kim Barnett, but Cheshire's young side proved they are maturing all the time.
Cheshire's last game of the season is against North Wales CA on the Tuesday 12th August at Malpas Cricket Club.
"It would be lovely if we could finish the season with another win," added Scrimgeour.
