Cheshire fall to defeat at Cornwall

Unicorns Championship - Western Division
Sunday - Tuesday 5,6,7 August 2018, Truro CC
Cornwall 245 & 285, Cheshire 232 & 223.
Cornwall won by 75 runs.

Cheshire suffered their second Championship defeat of the season as they went down by 75 runs at Truro. Despite match figures of 9-126 from Danny Woods, the hosts left Danny Leech's side frustrated on a turning wicket and still looking for their first win.

Cornwall skipper Matt Rowe's match figures of 11-130 further highlighted the spinner's dominance of the game.

Oxton's Chris Stenhouse made his Cheshire debut and there were recalls too for Bailey Wightman and Harry Killoran.

The all-important toss saw Cornwall bat first, Cheshire looking jaded at times on day one after a long overnight journey.

But with Wayne White taking 5-78, there was plenty of optimism after Cornwall made 245 and a second day rally saw a first innings reply of 232, Will Evans 47, making the game effectively a one innings head to head.

A fine 93* from skipper Matt Rowe and 51 from Sam Wood were the highlights of Cornwall's second dig, frustrating some decent Cheshire bowling which saw Woods take five wickets in a Championship innings for the 21st time in 51 outings.

Cheshire looked well set for a 299 chase on the last day against a predominantly spin attack and at 103-1 were favourites to secure a first win. A flurry of wickets however turned things round and ultimately six LBWs put paid to a gutsy challenge, Rick Moore hitting 64 and Wayne White capping a fine game as he ran out of partners on 64. Cheshire closed on 223, 75 runs adrift. In addition to his 93*, Rowe took 6-69 to go with his 5-63 first innings haul.

"Hard to take again," commented Danny Leech. "We played some good cricket at times and I can't fault the effort put in after a long trip. Danny and Wayne were outstanding again and we'll dust ourselves down for the next game."

That match is against the current champions and table-toppers Berkshire at Chester Boughton Hall starting on Sunday 19 August.
