Staffordshire - Monday 7 May at Knypersley CC

Cheshire got their Unicorns T20 Trophy off to a flyer over a scorching bank holiday weekend.

A double header at Toft saw them defeat Cumberland twice. A defeat and victory followed in the Knypersley double with Staffordshire the next day.

Skipper Rick Moore paid tribute to his tired troops, recognising the efforts put in over the two days. "Our players have had it tough with four games in two days on the back of their normal Saturday league games," he said. "I'll happily settle with three wins from four. It was just the first game with Staffordshire where we under performed a bit but we bounced back well."

The Staffordshire defeat was technically the first time Cheshire have lost a T20 game after they won the inaugural trophy in 2015.

Moore called the toss correctly in all four games and batted first in each.

The weekend started at sun kissed Toft with Cheshire winning by 50 runs and by 9 runs. Will Evans (59) and Ed Fluck (58*) were amongst the runs in the first game where Cheshire made 184. Wayne White (53), Calum Turner (35) and Moore (32) contributed to the 158 total in the second. Wickets were spread across the side over the two games, Jack White collecting four.

Staffordshire proved a tougher nut to crack as they cruised to victory in the first game, chasing down Cheshire's 141-8 with ease. Wayne White top scored for the visitors with a fine half century but the bowlers toiled in the sun.

However, conditions changed dramatically for the second game as the pitch got slower. Cheshire's 138 (Fluck 28) felt below par but the bowling cranked up a level with Simon Normanton outstanding as he took 3-19, ably backed by Nick Anderson, Luke Robinson and Oliver Griffiths who each bagged two.

Cheshire now face double headers with Northumberland and Lincolnshire to determine the group winner with final's day in August. First off though it's 50 over KO Trophy action against Cumberland at Oxton on Sunday 20 May.
