Last over drama as Cheshire scrape home

Unicorns KO Trophy Group 2
Sunday 7 May 2017, Newport CC
Wales MC 200-9 (50 overs), Cheshire 201-9 (49.5 overs).
Cheshire won by 1 wicket

Woods and White see things through.

Cheshire's 10th wicket partnership of Wayne White and Danny Woods saw them home in dramatic fashion against Wales Minor Counties at Newport.

The one wicket win from the penultimate ball gives Cheshire a great opportunity to move through to the knock-out stages of the Unicorns Trophy with games left against Herefordshire and Staffordshire.

Staffordshire top the group with three wins and if Cheshire can beat Herefordshire at Alderley Edge next week, it'll be a shoot-out between the two to top the group and get home advantage in the quarter finals.

That looked some way off with Cheshire perched precariously on 190-9 and still needing 11 runs. And with 9 required from the last over, White and Woods held their nerve to see things through, White finishing with an unbeaten 60 following on from Will Evans' 63.

Earlier Cheshire restricted their hosts to 200-9 with White (2-45) and Woods (2-25) also in the wickets.

"It was tough going at times on a worn wicket," commented skipper Lee Dixon, "But we fought well. I think we should probably have restricted them to around 150/160 but we weren't at our sharpest in the field and the bowlers deserved better from us - they all bowled well.

"I'm really pleased to see Will Evans in the runs at the top of the order too, he and Calum Rowe complement each other with their differing styles and they got us off to a decent start, putting on 79.

"We found the going tough after that but Wayne (White) steadied the ship and was there at the end to get us over the line."
