Cheshire bow out with defeat to Herefordshire

Unicorns Championship Western Division:
Sunday - Tuesday 16-18 August 2015, Chester Boughton Hall CC
Cheshire CCC 277 & 110-9, Herefordshire 337 & 52-0.
Herefordshire won by 10 wickets.

Cheshire completed their disappointing 2015 Championship campaign with a 10 wicket defeat against Herefordshire inside two days.

Danny Woods' experimental side battled hard early on but were overpowered in the latter stages by their more experienced opposition.

Woods' side included a number of new caps providing the opportunity to blood youth with little more than pride to play for. There were also a significant number of players unavailable for the fixture and the County's resources were stretched.

That said, there is a breadth of talent across Cheshire and this young side showed good potential at times to give Woods' food for thought.

Cheshire made first use of a typical good Chester wicket but 277 felt below par. Inform Alderley Edge pair Alan Day (73) and 'keeper Adam Worral shone with good contributions from the returning Andy Clark (30) and 'Edge's debutant bowler Tom Foreman (26). Dan Conway took 4-30 for the visitors.

Herefordshire's 337 reply gave Adam Syddall - playing his 100th minor counties game - two wickets, the skipper four and three for Clarke. Foreman looked promising with 1-71 from 14 overs.

A lead of 60 and a second innings total of just 110 with Woods making 30 meant Herefordshire were able to round things off inside two days to consign Cheshire to a fourth defeat from their six games, winning just one (at Wales MC).

Woods' was philosophical after a long season. "Obviously we're devastated to have lost inside two days," he said. "It's been a tough season and there was a lot of pain in the dressing room after this one."

"It's important the players don't lose confidence or faith in their ability. We have a talented group of players in the County and the Cheshire County League is extremely strong in my opinion. We're all upset about how the season has turned out but come back stronger next year."

Woods' can rightly point to unavailability of key players meaning his options were limited throughout the six games. And in truth, with a Championship under Cheshire's belt just two years ago, a semi-final appearance in the KO Trophy in 2014 and a fine victory to become the inaugural Unicorns T20 Champions just last month, there is much to build on for 2016.
