Unicorns Championship - Western Division

Cheshire spin to victory in Wales
By Jim Law

Sunday - Tuesday 21-23 June 2015, Newport CC
Cheshire CCC 309 & 279-8 declared Wales MC CC 279 & 290
Cheshire (23 points) beat Wales MC (7 points) by 19 runs.

After the nightmare of Whitchurch and a heavy defeat by Shropshire, Cheshire bounced back in fine style to win their three day game with Wales Minor Counties in Newport by 19 runs.

It was a tight finish after three competitive day's cricket but just what the doctor ordered for skipper Danny Woods.

"The win showed great character after the disappointment of our first game", said Woods, "and it showed our true character. We were all disappointed to get our season off on the wrong foot but now we're really up and running".

Changes to the Cheshire side saw young spinner Harry Killoran back in the fold and he and Woods both weighed in with eight wickets apiece as the spinners dominated. Killoran had match figures of 8-104 and Woods 8-131,

All this after Calum Rowe (101) and Rick Moore (102) had laid down the gauntlet with a first innings total of 309 - 100 more than Cheshire scored in two innings at Whitchurch.

Wales looked to bounce back as Holmes hit a fine 109 in a reply of 279 and then Rowe again showed his class with 63, Toft debutant James Drummond (62) and Lee Dixon (60) all helped set Wales a target of 310.

The home side went for it from the off and a gallant effort saw them fall just 19 runs short late in the day, the spinners turning the screws after all looked dead to secure a fine performance.

"Congratulations to Calum, Rick and Harry on big performances", continued Woods. "When the chips looked down, we didn't give up and we got our reward. We're now really looking forward to hosting Dorset in our next game".
