Danny Woods young Cheshire side dug deep to overturn Wales Minor Counties in two days on a tricky Bowdon pitch.

Playing second fiddle in the early stages, Woods' men showed their mettle in their second innings to chase down 173 and win by seven wickets.

In a match that saw 33 wickets fall in two days, an unbeaten 83 from Calum Rowe, together with 44 from England under 19 all-rounder Rob Jones forced the win with a fine 115 fourth wicket partnership.

It all seemed an uphill struggle for Cheshire as wickets tumbled to set up an exciting finish. And at 60-3 with Pat Roberts, Rick Moore and Lee Dixon back in the hutch, Wales MC had the upper hand. But Rowe and Jones got their heads down to both record personal bests and another thumbs up for Cheshire youth.

Earlier Wales MC had mustered 177 with Woods claiming a fine 6-46 and Harry Killoran 3-43. Greig Holmes top scored for the visitors with 60.

The Cheshire batsmen then found the going equally as tough, falling short with 142, including a classy 42 from Moore. Harry Powell and Aneuin Morgan grabbed three wickets each.

When Wales MC posted 137 second time around (Woods, Syddall and Killoran taking three wickets each), a chase of 173 looked a tough challenge.

And ultimately it was left to the maturity of young Rowe and Jones to claim a memorable victory.

Woods was naturally delighted at his side's fight back. 'It was a fantastic win and an outstanding performance," he said. "Congratulations to Calum Rowe on a mature and match winning innings, brilliantly supported by Rob Jones.

"It's great news for the county that such exciting young players are contributing so well. We've a tough game against Wiltshire next but can take confidence from this performance."

Cheshire travel to leaders Wiltshire (Salisbury, 3, 4, 5 August) before wrapping up their campaign against Oxfordshire at Nantwich.
