Cheshire v Berkshire at Nantwich
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday August 5, 6 and 7, 2012

By Derrick Hastings

Following a rained-off match at Alderley Edge at the beginning of July and a long and tiring trip down to Cornwall, the Cheshire players are looking forward to the last two Championship matches of this year’s campaign being held at home grounds.

The first of these is this coming weekend (5 – 7 August) when Cheshire meet Berkshire at Nantwich C.C.

Berkshire has a strong team that have yet to show its true potential this year and it is only six points ahead of Cheshire in the Championship table, so the match promises to be an exciting one.

Although the team has yet to be announced, it is expected that both Warren Goodwin, who made a welcome return to the side at Truro, and Rick Moore should be available to play, which will boost the batting performance of the Cheshire side. They will join Nantwich ‘keeper and opening bat Jonny Kettle and the batting find of the season, Khalid Sawas of Macclesfield, along with stalwarts Lee Dixon (Chester BH) and James Duffy (Hyde), who will again Captain the side.

On the bowling front, Ian Tait, who also plays for Macclesfield, will again join Adam Syddall of Urmston as openers with Danny Woods of York providing the main spin attack. Tait is another debutant this year who has made a great impression and his six-for in the first innings and a match return of nine wickets against Cornwall shows that he is still improving.

“I just hope that the weather will be kind to us this time,” said Duffy. “With the previous home Championship game being completely ruined by rain, I am looking forward to playing what will be, in effect, our first home match and I am sure that we shall be able to record our first win of the season in front of our own supporters.”

The match is scheduled to start at 11:00 am on each of the three days, although the second and third days can start at 10:30 if there has been a loss of overs in earlier days. Nantwich C.C. is on Whitehouse Lane (CW5 6HH) Telephone: 01270 626155.
