Must-win Championship match for Cheshire
By Derrick Hastings

The new-look Cheshire squad, that lost its first match of the season away to Shropshire, fought back strongly against Wales MC at Usk to achieve a well-deserved draw in a rain affected match. The team is looking to win its first Championship match of the season at Alderley Edge next weekend when Cheshire host Dorset in a three-day match starting on Sunday, 8th July.

“The experience gained by the Cheshire newcomers in the first two rounds will stand them in good stead for the rest of the competition,” said James Duffy (pictured left), Cheshire’s Captain. “None of the five debutants playing this season had any experience of three-day cricket, which involves a very different approach to the game than seen in their regular League games. This is particularly true of batting but it also affects the bowlers, who need more stamina to keep fighting to the end of the match.”

“I was pleased with the way the batsmen knuckled down to the task of securing the draw against Wales. It proved that the less experienced ones have begun to learn the skills of building an innings and not necessarily try to score off every ball.”

“We have to win this game if we are to stand a realistic chance of winning the Western Division of this year’s Championship, although the way the weather has been affecting the whole country this season, anything can happen.”

“Apart from anything else, it would be good to beat Dorset next weekend to get revenge for them winning at Toft in the Quarter Final of the Knock Out Trophy competition,” he added.

The match is scheduled to start at 11:00 am on each of the three days, although the second and third days can start at 10:30 if there has been a loss of overs in earlier days. The post code for Alderley Edge C.C. is SK9 7HN and the club can be contacted on 01625 584733.
