New Captain looks forward to Cheshire’s first match of the season
By Derrick Hastings (Hon. Secretary, Cheshire C.C.C.)

James Duffy, the new Captain of Cheshire County Cricket Club is relishing the prospect of the coming season, with a team comprising many seasoned campaigners and a few new faces.

“It is very exciting for me,” said Duffy (pictured left). “With several of last year’s squad no longer available to play for the County, we are drawing on the large pool of talent discovered in the Development XI. The first match of the season is a Knock-out Trophy game away to Northumberland, who are always a good side on their home grounds, and it will be a tough challenge.”

“It will be a baptism by fire for the three debutants, Scott Kirwin, Mark Rowland and Khalid Sawas,” he continued, “but I am confident that their skills and enthusiasm will add to the experience of the more senior members of the squad. We are lucky to be able to call on the services of the best players in the County, all of whom are eager to start this year’s campaign.”

“We have some old friends coming back into the team as well. Chris Tipper, who played in one Championship game for us last year and who is now back playing for Hyde, will add to our batting strength and Jonny Fawcett is making a welcome return to the side,” said Duffy. “We have a new twelfth man for this match as well. Last year, Ross Dixon filled that position for most of the year but he is now Captain of the Development XI so, for the first match at least, his place is being taken by Calum Rowe. This will give him valuable experience in the First XI dressing room.”

The match is being played at South Northumberland C.C. (NE3 1LU) on Sunday, 22nd April and the game starts at 11:00 am.

There are three more Trophy matches to be played before the Championship competition starts, with home games against Cumberland at Christleton on the 6th May and against Herefordshire at Bramhall on the 20th May. These sandwich another away game against Cambridgeshire at Saffron Walden on the 13th May.

If Cheshire progress beyond the initial group stage, they will be playing in the quarter final which will be held on the 17th June and the semi final on the 1st July. There is a reserve day on the 2nd, should the weather interfere and the final is to be played at Wormsley on the 29th August with the 30th as a reserve.
